SyNOPSIS

THE MYSTERY OF THE GIANT CRYSTALS is a fascinating adventure in scientific research. A journey into the depths of the Earth in search of the most beautiful treasures of the mineral world, to explain one of its great mysteries: the formation of giant gypsum crystals. From the Roman mines of Segóbrica described by Pliny the Elder, to Europe’s biggest geode, found in Almería, Spain; from the volcanic depths of the Andes, to the grandiose “Cueva de los Cristales de Naica”, an authentic crystal palace hidden beneath the Mexican desert of Chihuahua, we shall discover the wonderful world of crystals, their science and their beauty, through the guiding hand of Professor Juan Manuel García-Ruiz.

TRAILER

The movie

The script of the movie is based on the scientific project carried out by an international team of geologists and crystallographers leaded by Prof. García-Ruiz on the formation of giant crystals of gypsum. The scientific research started in 2000 in the ancient roman mines described by Plinio the Elder in Segóbriga (Castilla-La Mancha, Spain). Since them, the team is working in this and other localities around the world were huge crystals of gypsum have been discovered, specially in the ore mine of Naica (Chihuaua, México), in the copper mine of El Teniente (Chile) y and in the lead-iron close to Pulpí (Andalucía, España). The research is still revealing new data and  explanations such as the formation theory of the colossal crystals of Naica, which was published in the best journals in the field as well as in popular magazines . The movie narrates a research adventure across all these locations and at the same time explains scientific concepts easy to understand in the context of wonderful scenes of the mineral world. .
